Getting Red Right

Achieving the perfect red lip requires risk and balance; here are some tips to getting it right!

Get red-y for sexy lips that attract attention, from a classic matte to the high gloss shine of a wet pearl, a bright red lip is always in style. It’s important to choose the right shade of red for your personal coloring and there are general rules to follow based on your skin tone. Fair to lighter skins should select reds with blue or cool undertones. Medium and olive based skins look best with warmer colors, such as orange tinged reds. Darker skin tones should stick with deeper shades of berry, paler reds with white tones can appear ashy on dark skin.

Of course, don’t be afraid to break the rules, red is a color of rebellion after all! More than anything, it’s about the look that works for you. Experiment with coverage and finish before deciding on the rest of your makeup. If you choose a sheer coverage formula, there will be a softer look on the lip. Therefore, you can play up the other features. Whereas an opaque or full coverage creates a bold lip, so you will probably want to narrow the focus and go easy on the shadow and blush. Cool based opaque reds can appear very vampy and warmer opaque reds are the brightest of the bunch!

Application

1. Begin by exfoliating lips with a mild scrub, then hydrate with Cushion Lips, a unique gel conditioner that should be applied to dehydrated, chapped and irritated lips as needed, and prior to any environmental exposure. Allow the moisture to absorb until dry.

2. Prep the lip with a base for the color to adhere to using a little concealer or foundation. Lightly apply on and around the lip area with your fingertips.

3. Use a lip pencil in a coordinating shade to shape and define the lips. Fill in the entire lip for significantly longer wear.

4. First apply the lip color out of the tube or using the wand provided, then use the #35 Deluxe Lip Brush for an even application of color and to perfect the edges and corners.

BONUS TIP: Cool toned blue-reds make your teeth appear whiter, because the blue base helps to cancel out yellow tones.
