GRAPHIC LINER: Creating All The Right Angles

Donatella Versace’s take on the avant-garde came complete with modern gothic makeup to echo the angular deconstructed edge of her Versace Atelier Haute Couture show (in Paris this past January). Draped satin and sequins juxtaposed against metal hardware and leather buckles created glamorous contrast; the clothing demands a graphic cosmetic statement to match!

Here we are going to recreate a similar look that adds high drama for an outfit that requires something a little more fashion forward. Graphic liner is a really fun way to play with the traditional cat eye and do something different, but keep the lip and cheek subtle for the runway of real life.

Start with a freshly sharpened black liner pencil, you’ll want the tip to be a fine point. VL’s Duo Eye Pencil in Jet Black/Black Brown has a smooth, velvety texture that glides across delicate eyes without any tugging or pulling, making it ideal for drawing across the lid like this! The great part about doing this in pencil (as opposed to a liquid or gel) is that you can draw the lines in softly at first, with just a bit a pressure, which means that it is very easy to correct if you mess up!

Create the general outline for your graphic liner by beginning at the outer corner of the eye and draw as if you are doing a cat eye. Then from this point, continue that line into the inner corner of the upper lid. Be sure both eyes match up by opening and closing the eye a few times to see how this looks both ways.

Next draw in the lower portion right below the lash line, extending into the inner lower corner. This is the outer shape of your graphic eye. Create the inner shape by placing the pencil in the crease of the eye directly across from the cat eye you’ve previously formed. Then from this point, continue drawing upwards until you have reached the top line. Bring your pencil back to the inner point in your crease and draw downwards at an angle to the inner eye corner.

Now fill in the outlined shape with the pencil and set using a matte black shadow, but be precise! Use a small narrow liner brush that can reach into corners and has an angled tip, such as the #11 Slanted Liner Brush. Darken and set the lines you’ve just made, try the #3 shade from our Trio Pearl-To-Matte Eyeshadow Palette in Timeless (a true matte noir). Three coordinating shades in one small compact offer varied finishes from soft shimmer to demi-matte and matte.

Make any adjustments by fixing slipups with Olive Oil Fix Tip, the miracle product that can handle any makeup mishaps with ease, from mascara smudges to lip liner gone wrong! Using the wand, gently glide or dab solution over any liner errors for quick and detailed removal. Clean up around the edges of the lines if necessary, and underneath eyes if any shadow has strayed.

Curl lashes with the Mini Lash Curler starting from the outer corner, moving along lash line in small increments, stopping just short of inner corner of eye. This unique eyelash curler helps you to curl lashes in sections, keeping the curler a proper distance from the root.

Apply Ardell Double Up Lashes for a double layer style that gives you a fuller, thicker lash line. Add a coat of long lasting, flake-proof mascara to blend the falsies in with your natural lashes. Volume Plus Mascara has a rich, creamy formula packed with peptides to create body and volume in one stroke!

Finish cleaning up under and around the eye area with our Creme Concealer and a #33 Flat Eyeshadow Brush. Providing medium-to-full coverage of under-eye circles, blemishes, discolorations and minor flaws, our professional level concealer blends easily and invisibly into foundation, leaving no telltale edges behind.

Apply Water Canvas Primer and Foundation for a naturally flawless finish! Warm up cheeks with a light dusting along the cheekbone with a peachy neutral, such as Dew Drop Radiant Blush in Temple Peach. An innovative, powder-pressing technique layers several shades of color and a subtle drop of pearl shine creating a delicate glimmer that adds both radiant color and light-enhancing dimension to the face. Swirl the #27 Deluxe Blush Brush and tap off excess powder, then move with soft circular motions along cheekbone, outward and upward toward ear and hairline.

You’ll just want a slight sheen to the lip with a complementary peach tone, like Baby Balm in Soft Saturn, a sheer beige-peach shimmer. The perfect mixture of a lipstick and a comforting balm, it delivers a translucent veil of color and sheen while healing and restoring lips with hydration. For greater density, apply with a #36 Travel Lip Brush and if your natural skin tone is darker, try adding a second layer of lipstick for a brighter finish!
